<image:title>Projects - Framing</image:title>
<image:caption>The Site: 120 Dawson Street, Brunswick West The Brief: A new building for the University of Melbourne Archive, an archive is an intriguing hybrid of a library, a museum and a warehouse. The objects housed in archives sometimes have unique associations , such as the typewriter owned by a famous author, rather than, say, just any old typewriter. While the works on paper housed in archives are usually unique, i.e. drawings, d aries, letters, manuscripts, original photographs etc. - Architecture Design Studio: Fire ABPL30037 2014 SM2, Bachelor of Environments, Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning, The University of Melbourne The archive, titled ‘Framing’, serves as a frame that brings out and protects and shows off the full potential of a painting or manuscript. Which is what a contemporary archive could do, while engaging with the community at large. What this design aims to do is to create a connection between the community and the archive. The cleanness of the facade is for the sake of flexibility and is to be utilized as a tool for community engagement, through art installations as an extension from the gallery, educational murals, and community participation</image:caption>

Moving from the analysis of specific architectural ideas to arrive at the evaluation and selection of implementation alternatives. Mixing built examples and project proposals, students will be shown how to identify, evaluate and engage with the technological underpinnings of architecture through model making and utilising drafting softwares (AutoCAD) Group: Leon Cheng and Catherine Woo Model made over the course of 9 weeks without the use of computer software, solely based on reading the architectural and constrcutuion drawings provided by the university</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Site: 120 Dawson Street, Brunswick West The Brief: A new gallery/showroom/offices for the Outré Gallery to be located on the corner of Sydney Road and Albert Street in Brunswick, which will be adjacent to the new University of Melbourne Archives. The same ideas that you will be exploring through the Archives—cabinets of curiosities, graffiti, palimpsests, etc.—equally apply to this project, but, of course, at a smaller scale and perhaps a finer level of detail. - Architecture Design Studio: Fire ABPL30037 2014 SM2, Bachelor of Environments, Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning, The University of Melbourne The gallery, titled ‘Framing’, aims to bring out and protect and show off the full potential of a painting or art piece. <image:caption>The Brief: Consist of a three dimensional sculptural form that has the ability to stimulate and challenge the mind of visitors to the site. The work should aim to solicit contemplation from viewers on such broad ideas as ecological systems, human habitation and development, energy and resource generation and consumption, and/or other concepts at the discretion of the design team. Utilising programs such as Rhino as the primary tool to explore the potential and, improve computational & parametric design skills - Architecture Design Studio: Air ABPL30048 2014 SM1, Bachelor of Environments, Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning, The University of Melbourne 木漏れ日 Komorebi - Group 08: Cecilia Ngyuen, Jen Young Tan, and Catherine Woo Defined in Japanese as the phenomena of “light coming through the trees”, a phenomena that this design emulates through the design of a skeletal forest, which will serve as a recreational area with a small stage and seating area for the users around the site. Complimenting the upcoming contemorary entertainment establishments surrounding the site. The name - Komorebi, emerged as the design evolved, as the phenomena became an integeral part of the design aesthetic, as seen through the canopies of glass and photovoltaics</image:caption>

<image:title>The Capsule - Plans</image:title>
<image:caption>The Capsule began with geometries tagged and categorized according to the functionality of the spaces, and through the integration of previous philosophies, the form of the structure morphed into more dynamic and organic shapes, all while retaining and enhancing the efficiency of the spaces</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53b0e70ee4b02125b9194540/1425272654389-YYNBSWCY9XV77RIIJDHT/Sections.png</image:loc>
<image:title>The Capsule - Sections</image:title>
<image:caption>Sizas’ logic and rationality in layout design and circulation has a large influence in the conception of the geometry of the structure. This ability to balance and not compromise the functional integrity of the design is an admirable skill to emulate. The Capsule attempts this through morphing the physical aesthetics of the building through its functions</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53b0e70ee4b02125b9194540/1425270640012-GRBVGTI0NWOPM341E1R5/3D+view+2+copy.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>The Capsule - Entry</image:title>
<image:caption>Siza's philosophy has been explored in The Capsule through contrasting materiality for the interior and exterior spaces, with contemporary and vintage respectively. The versatility of the spaces are also required to facilitate a myriad of events and functions, hence the selection of whitewashed concrete for the contemporary exterior, and a combination of weathered timber, concrete, and masonry for the rustic interior.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53b0e70ee4b02125b9194540/1425270140120-PPAVTDP4QC08N0AZUIVD/3D+view+1+copy.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>The Capsule - The Courtyard</image:title>
<image:caption>In The Capsule, the integration of a courtyard not only forges a direct relationship between the vertical and horizontal planes of the building</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53b0e70ee4b02125b9194540/1425270800402-OGK6RNDKMDAMQ53M497L/3D+view+3+copy.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>The Capsule - Capturing Views I</image:title>
<image:caption>Strategic openings, and physical obstructions/ filters to control views (Banco Borges Irmao, Casa Alves Santos, Camargo Museum), evolved the design of The Capsule to hybridize materials and geometry to utilize the main North, North- Westerly and Eastern views to enhance the user experience by adding another dimension of visual stimulation through strategic openings</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53b0e70ee4b02125b9194540/1425271015829-2NKBF2XK98DS2XNWK9F5/3D+view+4+copy.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>The Capsule - Capturing Views II</image:title>
<image:caption>This was another aspect of Siza’s philosophy through his inclination for capturing views, which are dynamic and unique. In doing so, interesting and curious experiences for the users throughout his architecture. This philosophy also aligns with the idea of versatile spaces, and the importance of impression by users in creating vivid and lasting memories. Another formal idea by Siza which was incorporated into the layout and distribution of spaces within the design</image:caption>
